The ubiquity of these stories makes me wonder if it has truly never occurred to any of the people writing, editing, and publishing/broadcasting them that women have, ya know, been voting for decades now, despite the dearth of female candidates, and they’ve obviously managed to develop a system for choosing a candidate irrespective of sex, given that they had no women for whom to vote. Why being offered, at long last, a serious female contender should spontaneously render obsolete our methodology for assessing candidates on the merits of their positions, I have no idea. But note to the media: It hasn’t.
TASER electronic stun guns are a form of torture that can kill, a UN committee has declared after several recent deaths in North America. “The use of these weapons causes acute pain, constituting a form of torture,” the UN’s Committee against Torture said. “In certain cases, they can even cause death, as has been shown by reliable studies and recent real-life events,” the committee of 10 experts said.
Certain ideas do not deserve to be “debated” by civilized people. The idea that black people are inherently stupid and that we should stop investing in early-childhood education for poor black kids is assuredly one of them. Civilized people shouldn’t respond to this idea by saying “I am told by people whom I admire that Charles Murray is a reputable scientist.” Civilized people should respond by saying, “UP YOURS ASSHOLE!!” Because anything less than that simply gives these people far too much credibility.
We stand on the shoulders of those who went before us. We stand with the help of those who stand with us, whether we are aware of it, or whether we choose to admit it. In the United States, we are taught that we stand “on our own two feet,” as if we weren’t taught how to stand, how to walk. We are supposed to “pull our own bootstraps” regardless of whether we have shoes, or broken laces. Even those of us who are not taught those lessons in our family of origin are affected by them, as the Cult of Individuality permeates the atmosphere outside the front door: in the schools, in the workplace, and especially in the political arena, where the values of Calvinism are given a fuel injection of Ayn Rand. We are told that those who stumble are careless. That they should have planned better. Should have had more savings. Should have foreseen the deluge. Didn’t they know that it was inevitable? That they aren’t among the saved?
